# 404 page

Shown when someone hits a URL that doesn't exist — a "Page not found" heading, a short line of explanation, and a button back to the homepage. Header, footer, and cart all still work, so a lost visitor is never stranded.

**Where to find it:** theme editor → page selector → **Others → 404 page**.

## Settings

### Section style

* **Top padding** / **Bottom padding** (0–120 px, default 64), **Background color**, **Text color**.

The heading, message, and button text come from the theme's language file — editable via **Online Store → Themes → … → Edit default theme content** if you want different wording.

💡 **Pro tip:** most 404 hits come from links to products you've deleted. Instead of deleting a sold-out product, set its status to Draft or archive it — or set up a URL redirect (**Online Store → Navigation → View URL redirects**) pointing the old address at the relevant collection.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://sitesbyseth.gitbook.io/sitesbyseth-docs/skeleton/sections/main-404.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
